Senior Pet Care

Regular preventative care is even more important for senior animals to prevent or delay the diseases that older animals are more prone to including diseases of the kidney, heart, and liver; cancers; osteoarthritis; and hormone disorders. Remember that animals age at a rate of five to seven times that of humans, so frequent wellness visits are strongly recommended to make sure that all of your pet’s healthcare needs are being met.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association, the following warnings signs could indicate a problem that should be addressed by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain
  • Significant decrease or increase in appetite or failure to eat for more than two days
  • Noticeable decrease in vision
  • Increasing inactivity or time spent sleeping
  • Excessive panting
  • Hair loss, especially if accompanied by scratching in a localized area
  • Seizures or convulsing

At Brookdale Animal Hospital, we offer programs that are tailored specifically for the needs of senior dogs and cats, which include a complete blood count, urinalysis, blood-chemistry panel, and parasite evaluation. Our veterinarians can also suggest a specially formulated food for your pet, whose new nutritional needs will benefit from an adjusted diet. Keeping your pet active is also helpful in slowing the deterioration of senses associated with the aging process.
